Belmont Participates In British Triathlon's New Pilot Scheme

Belmont School is taking part in the British Triathlon Active Skills for Life scheme, a new initiative to introduce triathlon to school age children.  Belmont is initially running the scheme with its Year 3 and 4 pupils.  Pupils are being taught the skills of swimming, cycling and running and how to transition between the three.

Mrs Emmett, Head of Girls Games at Belmont says, “We are delighted to be taking part in this new teacher training pilot scheme, which has been introduced into our PE lessons and as an after-school club.  Triathlon focuses on developing agility, balance, co-ordination, and speed of movement through the disciplines of swimming, cycling and running.  We have our own woodland to run, an outdoor pool to swim in and our own fleet of bikes for pupils to use, and so it is easy for us to run triathlon at school.  Many of our pupils enjoy these activities in their spare time, so we are incorporating this enthusiasm into our core curriculum.”

Amy Crow, Head of Children and Young People at British Triathlon says, “We are excited to launch this pilot of new school resources, which aim to support the training and development of teachers who confidently engage, motivate and inspire children and young people within swim, bike, run activities at school. With a large emphasis on enjoyment, skill development and core values, Active Skills for Life offers a support package to teachers and schools to assist in the delivery of swim, bike, run activity as we strive to increase children’s self-esteem, confidence, and ability through participation in triathlon.  We look forward to introducing Active Skills for Life to many more schools in the 2021-22 academic year.”    

The children will be taking part in ten sessions culminating with a full triathlon event for Year 3 and 4 pupils at the end of the Summer Term.  Belmont hopes its pupils will be inspired to continue with triathlon both in and out of school once the training is complete.
